LA High School Students Meet French Cinema at COLCOA

For the second year COL•COA and its sponsor ELMA are going to support a new generation of foreign film viewers. 2008 marked the first year of the COL•COA High School screenings. More than 1,100 teachers and students from sixteen LA County high schools attended and enjoyed the North American Premiere of Dany Boon’s film WELCOME TO THE STICKS at the Directors Guild of America.

The program will be extended in 2009 and COL•COA will be hosting 4 screenings from Tuesday April 21 to Friday April 24, 2009 during the 13th annual edition of “A Week of French Film Premieres in Hollywood” (April 20-26, 2009).  All screenings will take place at 10:00 am in the prestigious theater complex of the Directors Guild of America, located at 7920 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90046.

The session is expected to last 2 hours and 30 minutes, which includes a Q/A session with the filmmakers, based on their availability. The film will be selected by February 2009 and presented in French with English subtitles. This screening is open to all high school teachers and their students in the greater Los Angeles area. Rest assured that the selected film will suit American audiences, and will be appropriate for youth, ages 15 and older. Each school will be responsible for transportation of its students and/or insurance issues pertaining to this off-campus field trip. Teachers and schools interested in attending should reserve their seats now by contacting us at school@colcoa.org. Please mention how many students and teachers plan to attend.

NEW IN 2009
All participating high-school students will have the opportunity to write a review of the film selected and win a prize in association with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA). Members of LAFCA will read all reviews and will choose their three favorites.
This educational program is produced by COL•COA, with the support of ELMA (European Languages and Movies in America), California Language Teachers Association (CLTA/MCLASC), American Association of Teachers of French-Southern California (AATF-SC) and the Cultural Services of the French Consulate in Los Angeles. In turn, COL•COA is sponsored by the Franco-American Cultural Fund (FACF), an international entertainment partnership between the Directors Guild of America (DGA), the Motion Picture Association (MPA), Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs, et Éditeurs de Musique (SACEM), and Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW).
