Many Czechs head to cinema to see the long-awaited new motion picture by popular and critically acclaimed father & son duo Zdeněk (*1936) and Jan Svěrák (*1965). However the responses are very differents. Director Jan Svěrák studied documentary at the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU). He even got the Student Academy Award for his 20 minutes long mockumentary Oil Gobblers in 1988. The Czech National Film Archive (NFA) proceeds in digital restoration of Czech classics. After last year’s screening of Ikarie XB-1 (Jinřich Polák, 1963) in Berlin and Cannes, NFA is doing re-release of Miloš Forman’s Black Peter (1964) at the 74th edition of the Venice International Film Festival. I admit, it was the title, that caught my eye. Based on the shot featured in this article (the one in the art gallery), I’ve prepared myself for German communist Wes Anderson. I guess it wasn’t a mistake, since pretty much nothing can prepare you on the Self-criticism of a bourgeois dog (premiered in 2017). The film is a comedy by young (33 years old) German director and actor Julian Radlmaier. In fact, it’s his third movie. On Mars 23rd is starting Prague international film festival, also known as Febiofest. For 9 days, it’ll feature film from all around the globe for 99 CZK per screening (139 CZK if you want to support local charity) in cinemas in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic.
